June 6th was a special day for the 8th graders at Ogdensburg School.
The students from DEFY (Sussex County’s Teen Drug Prevention Program) arrived with all the equipment to allow the students to participate in a drug awareness game show called Straight Talk with DEFY.
The Power Point show “ How to Say No” as well as the game show questions were all created by the teen members of DEFY.

The students filed into the cafeteria at 8:30 and settled down at the tables laden with fresh fruit, four varieties of muffins, fresh rolls with butter and jelly, juice and flavored water.
As they ate their breakfast the team from DEFY rolled out the game show.

They divided the students into two groups and the fun began. On the right we had the “Grapefruits” and on the left the “Tacos.”
Each team competed to answer as many questions as they could about the dangers of substance abuse.
The “Grapefruits” were the final winners with 32 points but both groups gained knowledge from this fun experience.

As eighth graders our students are now eligible to become members of DEFY this breakfast provided an introduction to the teens now involved in the program.
We hope as they enter High School our students will become involved in many of the worthy programs offered by the local high schools.

On another grade level the 4th grade and their families built Blue Bird Houses on June 11th in an effort to involve young students in worthwhile hobbies.
Anna Szonyi distributed bird seed to each student after they viewed a program on the plight of our beautiful Eastern Bluebird.

All research shows the more involved students are with family, friends and the community the less likely they are to become involved in substance abuse.
This community event is last Drug Alliance program for the 2006-2007 school year.
